Internet TV vs Online Video vs Video on Demand vs...

...and the list goes on and on.

With the emergence of so many online video options, what do we call them all? We still continue to put them under labels that have long been used because their behavior is much the same as those terms. For instance, are movie downloads video-on-demand?

There needs to be some form of delineation. If movie downloads are video-on-demand, how do we draw the line between traditional pay-per-view TV and iTunes? Are movie downloads Internet TV? Are YouTube videos “online video” or “video-on-demand”?

Here are some terms and sites that would generally fall under them:

Internet TV - Sites like ManiaTV, MLB TV or ABC's airing of prime time TV shows
Online Video - Technically, online video is no different than Internet TV, but the term has been more commonly used for viral video sites. This would include YouTube, but could also be AOL Video or Google Video. Can these drastically different sites be tagged as one of the same?
Video-on-demand - Do we keep this tied to traditional TV or use it for all of these online video sites as well? Is online video synonymous for video-on-demand?
Movie/TV Downloads - Is that online video or video-on-demand?

Would like to hear others thoughts on these...what do you think of when you hear these terms or sites? How do you differentiate TV and video?

Re: Internet TV vs Online Video vs Video on Demand vs...

It really comes down to the way the terms have been used in the past. Online Video is really just video on demand, but it's never been called that. Also, Video on Demand is characterized by using a program guide on a set top box, not a web page on your PC. There's not much actual difference, but the way people have used the terms in the past creates a lot of implied difference.

Here's how I would define things:
IPTV - Digital TV delivered on an owned IP network.
Internet TV - Digital TV delivered across the Internet.
Online Video - Digital programming delivered on demand, in real-time, over the internet.
Video On Demand - Digital programming delivered on demand, in real-time, over an owned IP network.
Movie/TV Downloads - Digital programming delivered on demand over the internet but not in real-time.
